The Conference Chalk Pick-Off: Week 10

The weeks of unbeaten teams cruising to huge victories ended last week, but does the CC staff see a return to the favorites winning big? Take these picks and you’ll end up with more money than Jon Corzine by Sunday.

Even Corzine will be eating steak again if Stanford keeps covering.

Locks of the Week:
CONNER ANDERSON: ARKANSAS (-5) vs South Carolina: I’m going back to the Razorbacks who are undervalued after coasting thru road wins the last 2 weeks. Conner Shaw on the road? I’m not sold just yet.

DAVE MASON: STANFORD (-21.5) at Oregon State: Stanford is too business-like for a letdown in Corvailles, and I plan on riding the Luck train as long as I can.

GALE BERG: FLORIDA (-13.5) vs Vanderbilt: I’m taking Charlie Weis and the small person growing in his stomach over the Harvard of the South.

The Big Games:
Alabama (-4.5) vs LSU
The staff takes LSU.

Oklahoma St. (-21) vs Kansas St.
Anderson: Oklahoma St.
Mason: Oklahoma St.
Berg: Kansas St.

Saturday Afternoon Diary – Week 6, 2011

After a long layoff, the wildly popular Saturday Afternoon Diary is back in full force. The original plan was to kickoff last week live from the Notre Dame-Purdue tailgate, but I was more hungover than Billy Joel after a late night drive. Anyway, this week is coming to you live from Katy Trial Ice House in the Uptown neighborhood of Dallas. Let’s get started.

11:00 - The Red River Shootout is kicking off right down the street, but this group of Texas and Oklahoma fans is more interested in trendy outfits and outdoor seating. Lets just say Colt McCoy  and Jordan Shipley could do damage here.

From Jersey Shore to Dallas, the Beerita has arrived.

11:06 - The drink of choice today is the Beerita, a margarita with an upside down Corona sitting in the glass. Well, when in Rome…

11:14 - The outfits the female football fans of Dallas opt for are fantastic. Lets call it Urban Cowboy Chic. Mid-calf cowboy boots with a Bohemian/hippie dress or romper are what it entails, and consider Conner Anderson a fan of the movement.

11:24 - Landry Jones and Oklahoma are out to an early lead. Since this bar is showing the OU-Texas game on all 20 TV’s, let’s hope this doesn’t turn into a classic Bob Stoops blowout.

11:40 – The Beerita is surprisingly alot tastier than one would think. Also, if all of these Dallas hipsters are drinking them, it must be the thing to do. So is outdoor Jenga with giant wood blocks apparently, as I found out last night at a local establishment. [Read more...]

The Conference Chalk Pick-Off: Week Three

Similar to Central Florida, Demi continues to defy the odds.

The CC staff found their bearings in week 2, and bounced back in a big way. And just like actress Demi Moore, our picks will continue to improve the older the season gets. Plus, since Demi’s husband Ashton Kutcher was a loser in Choose Your Own Alumni – Iowa, its only fair to give the family some love. Now to the picks…

Locks of the Week:

GALE BERG: Oklahoma (-3) vs. FLORIDA STATE (Saturday 8PM EST) … Sure the Sooners have struggled on the road, but last year’s blowout win shows that Bob Stoops > Mark Stoops.

DAVID MASON: Stanford (-9.5) vs. ARIZONA (Saturday 10:45PM EST) … Andrew Luck has picked up 2011 right where he left off in 2010 – kicking teams to the curb. Arizona always feels like a sexy underdog pick, but it never seems to pan out.

CONNER ANDERSON: Central Florida (-6) vs FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL (6PM EST) … Facing an SEC-caliber defense and superstar QB Jeff Godfrey, the magical start comes to an end for Mario Cristobal’s boys from FIU.

Several excellent non-conference matchups to lay some units on this week, and here’s what our staff thinks:
